While staying in a hotel, it is very tempting to give up on healthy and cost-efficient eating choices in favour of convenience. Eating at restaurants can be a nice treat when travelling, but can become costly if staying several nights. If you’re staying at a hotel with a kitchenette, like Mary-am Hotel, you can prepare your own meals, saving you money and allowing you to maintain your healthy lifestyle. Read on for a meal plan that can easily be made in your hotel room.
Breakfast: Mug Cake
Despite having the word “cake” in the name, a mug cake can be a healthy breakfast option and can be made in the comfort of your hotel room.
- 1/3 cup oat flour
- 1 tbsp oats
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- A pinch of salt
- 1 tbsp. cocoa powder
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp. applesauce
- 3-4 tbsp. milk
In a coffee mug, mix oat flour with oats, baking powder, salt, cocoa, and sugar. Use a fork to mix evenly. Add applesauce and vanilla extract, continue to mix. At this point, add 3-4 tablespoons of milk until a batter forms. Give batter a final stir to ensure an even mixture. Place mug in microwave for approximately 2 minutes or until the cake has set. Enjoy!
Lunch: Spring Salad with Mozzarella
A salad can be an excellent and quick meal to prepare in a hotel room. All ingredients can be easily purchased at a local grocer.
- 2 1/2 cups (2 to 3 packages) of tender baby lettuce leaves
- 1 ball fresh buffalo mozzarella, halved lengthwise, sliced 1/2-inch thick crosswise
- 2 scallions, white and pale-green parts only, trimmed and thinly sliced
- 4 radishes, trimmed and sliced into rounds
- Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
This is a one step meal. Place lettuce on a plate, arrange mozzarella and radishes on top and sprinkle with scallions. Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil prior to serving.
Dinner: Meatloaf in a Mug
Another simple meal in a mug. A delicious meatloaf recipe that can be prepared in 15 minutes.
- 2 tablespoons of 2% milk
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 tablespoons quick-cooking oats
- 1 teaspoon onion soup mix
- 1/4 pound lean ground beef
In a bowl, combine milk, ketchup, oats and soup mix. Crumble the ground beef into bowl and mix well. Pack into a microwave-safe mug coated with cooking spray. Cover mug and microwave on high for 3 minutes or until meat is no longer pink and a thermometer reads 160°; drain. Let stand for 3 minutes.
